Venice in November: weather, acqua alta, events and things to do

Venice in November: weather, acqua alta, events, the Art Biennale and Jenny Saville at Ca’ Pesaro until 22 November, plus practical planning tips.

WhenNOVEMBER 2026•Venezia

November is one of the most interesting months to see a different side of Venice. Days are shorter, weather can change quickly and acqua alta deserves some attention, but the city often feels more local than during the busiest seasons. It is also the month of some of Venice’s most authentic traditions.

01

Why visit Venice in November

After the busiest spring and summer periods, November can bring quieter calli and a more everyday atmosphere. Venice is not empty: weekends, major events and the San Marco–Rialto axis can still be busy. The difference is in the overall pace and the chance to explore Cannaregio, Castello and Dorsoduro more slowly.

02

Weather and what to pack

Expect cool temperatures, humidity and possible rain or fog. Dress in layers, bring a waterproof outer layer and comfortable shoes suitable for wet paving stones. Check the forecast shortly before travelling rather than packing for every possible extreme.

03

Acqua alta: plan for it, do not fear it

Autumn is one of the periods when high tides are more likely, but Venice is not permanently flooded. Tide events affect different areas at different levels and times, while MOSE now reduces the impact of the most significant events. Check the official tide forecast and keep your day flexible.

04

11 November: San Martino

San Martino is especially fun for families. Venetian children move through calli and shops banging spoons on pots and lids, reciting a rhyme and receiving sweets or a few coins. Pastry shops display the traditional decorated biscuit shaped like the saint on horseback.

05

21 November: Madonna della Salute

The Festa della Madonna della Salute is one of the city’s most heartfelt days. The pilgrimage to the Basilica, the temporary votive bridge across the Grand Canal, candles and the castradina tradition make 21 November a powerful glimpse into Venetian memory and everyday life.

06

Biennale Arte and indoor days

In 2026 the Art Biennale remains open until 22 November, making the first part of the month ideal for Giardini, Arsenale and exhibitions around the city. Rainy days are also perfect for museums, churches, Scuole Grandi and bacaro stops.

07

Jenny Saville at Ca’ Pesaro until 22 November

Among the exhibitions still open in November is Jenny Saville at Ca’ Pesaro – Galleria Internazionale d’Arte Moderna, running from 28 March to 22 November 2026. It is Saville’s first exhibition in Venice and brings together around thirty paintings, including new works created for Ca’ Pesaro as a tribute to the city. The exhibition follows museum opening hours and standard Ca’ Pesaro ticketing, so re-check MUVE before visiting.

08

Planning from Marghera

Leave the car at the apartment’s private parking and travel to Venice by bus or train. Before setting out, check the tide, any transport changes and the opening times of the places you really want to visit.

Marghera Venice Apartments tip

Do not fill every hour in November. Choose one area, one major visit and leave room for a pastry shop, a bacaro or an unexpected detour: this is one of the best months for enjoying Venice without chasing it.
