San Martino in Venice: the sweet, the children and the 11 November tradition
On 11 November Venice celebrates San Martino with children, pots, songs and the traditional decorated shortcrust pastry shaped like the saint on horseback.
On 11 November, while many visitors are already thinking of winter, Venice keeps a small, noisy and very local tradition alive. Children walk through calli and shops banging spoons on pots and lids, sing the San Martino rhyme and receive sweets or a few coins. Pastry shops display a large decorated biscuit shaped like the saint on horseback.
A very Venetian celebration
St Martin’s Day is observed in many parts of Europe, but Venice has developed its own unmistakable popular version. On 11 November groups of children move through calli and campi making noise with pots, lids and wooden spoons while reciting the traditional rhyme. It belongs to everyday city life much more than to the tourist calendar.
The San Martino sweet
The tastiest symbol is a large shortcrust biscuit shaped like St Martin on horseback, often covered with icing, chocolate, sweets and colourful decorations. Every pastry shop has its own version, and many Venetian families buy one for the children or to share at home.
Pots, lids and rhymes
Noise is part of the ritual. Children bang utensils on pots and lids and stop outside shops asking for a small treat. There is no need to chase a single official event: the tradition is often best encountered while walking through lived-in neighbourhoods away from the busiest routes.
San Martino with children
For families visiting Venice, it is easy to enjoy: no tickets, no compulsory stage and no fixed itinerary. Walk, stop at a pastry shop and explain to children that what they are seeing is not tourist entertainment but a custom Venetian children still repeat every year.
How to fit it into a Venice day
Combine 11 November with a walk through Cannaregio, Castello or Dorsoduro, a pastry stop and, if the weather turns, museums or churches. In November it is also wise to check the tide forecast and dress in layers.
Marghera Venice Apartments tip
If you are in Venice on 11 November, do not look only for an “event”. Step into a pastry shop, look at the decorated San Martino biscuits and let the sound of children in the calli lead you into the tradition.
