Venice Gondola Ride: Prices, Routes & Tips
Last updated: 10 September 2026
Some experiences belong to many cities. A gondola belongs to Venice. From the water, palaces, low bridges, small canals and waterside entrances reveal viewpoints that simply do not exist on foot.
The practical questions matter just as much: how much does a Venice gondola ride cost, how long does it last, how many people can ride, where should you start, Grand Canal or smaller canals, and do you need to book?

The €90 daytime and €110 evening/night amounts are fares for the gondola service, not official per-person ticket prices.
Up to 5 passengers can share one gondola. Families and small groups can therefore ride together within that limit, but dividing the total should not be presented as an official per-person fare.
How long is a gondola ride in Venice?
The standard daytime service is about 30 minutes; evening/night service about 35 minutes. Longer services can be requested and are priced proportionally to time.
The route depends on the departure station, duration and canal conditions, so no specific landmark is automatically included in every standard ride.
Grand Canal or smaller canals?
There is no single “Venice gondola route”. Departure station, duration, water traffic and operating conditions all affect the ride.
01
Grand Canal & iconic areas
A natural choice for a first visit and for Venice’s monumental side.
- •famous views and grand palazzi
- •the classic water-level image of Venice
- •easy to combine with St Mark’s or Rialto
- •well suited to a first visit
02
Smaller canals
On narrower waterways, façades, low bridges and water doors feel much closer.
- •a more intimate atmosphere
- •architecture at close range
- •small bridges and secondary waterways
- •a different scale from the Grand Canal
Neither option is universally better. If you have a preference, mention it before departure and ask what is feasible from that station at that time.
What is the best time for a gondola ride?
01
Morning
Often calmer with pleasant light; convenient for families and a relaxed start.
02
Afternoon
Easy to fit around St Mark’s, Rialto and a classic sightseeing day.
03
Sunset
Beautiful light and a popular time: plan ahead if sunset matters to you.
04
Evening
Reflections create a different atmosphere; from 7 pm the official evening/night fare applies.

Four details that tell the gondola’s story
01
The gondola was not created as a tourist attraction
For centuries it was part of Venice’s transport system. Patrician families could have boats and staff; City historical material also refers to “gondolieri de casada”, gondoliers attached to noble households.
02
Peggy Guggenheim and Venice from the water
Peggy Guggenheim made Venice her home. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection preserves her writing about the city, its canals and the experience of Venice from the water.
The public museum source we checked does not clearly confirm the often-repeated claim that she owned a private gondola with her own gondolier, so we do not present that detail as established fact.
03
Why is a gondola asymmetrical?
The hull is not perfectly symmetrical. Its shape is connected to the way a single gondolier propels and steers the boat with one oar through Venice’s waterways.
04
Where are gondolas built?
A “squero” is a traditional Venetian boatyard for building and maintaining boats. The Squero di San Trovaso in Dorsoduro is one of the best-known and sits close to a route in our Hidden Venice guide.
Is a gondola ride suitable for children?
Yes, for many families. The maximum is 5 passengers and a standard ride of about 30 minutes is manageable for many children.
Young children should always be supervised and everyone should follow the gondolier’s instructions when boarding, during the ride and when getting off.
Is a gondola ride in Venice worth it?
If you simply need public transport on the water, use the vaporetto. A gondola is an experience: it lets you see Venice from the historic water-level perspective of the city.
For a first visit it can be one of Venice’s symbolic experiences to try once, but budget, time, travel style and personal interests should decide.
